I have the honour to raport that acting pa suggestion of His Excellency the Governor I made a visit to Mr. Li Pak's estate at Castle Peak Bay, yesterday the 17th, instant, having first obtained M. Li Pak's permission to do so.

The land which Mr. Li Pak has under cultivation consists of several aores and is situated at the base of the south- era slope of the hills and close to the sea.

Sugar is the principal thing under cultivation at present, but there are many other pleats on trial in the grounds and I will deal with them individually.

Sugar. The ordinary Chinese variety and a variety from Province Wellesley, as well as some Penang seedlings, have been grown under siniler conditions, side by side. Mr. Di Pak obtained about 9,000 cuttings of the Province fellesley variety and about 2,000 Penang seellings from this Department in the spring of this year. The Province Fellesley cane is altogether much larger and healthier looking than the Chinese cane, but it remains to be sean whether it will give a greater amount of sugar per acre than the latter, and whether its quality is as good. Judging from appearances it certainly looks as if the yield of the Province Tellesley cana woull be much greater than that of the other. The Penang seedlings want more extensive trial. Mr. Di Pak bas one of the Chabanooga aills introduced by His Excellency the Governor two or three years ago, and the other is with Mr. Tang Yui-San, who also obtained sugar cane cuttings from this Department last spelag.

Beetroot Sugar. Two or three small patches of ground are taken up with the growing of beetroot from which Sugar is obtained and the plants are doing fairly wall, but have not arrived at maturity yet.
